No-exam life insurance

Quick-track underwriting explained: eligibility requirements, the actual process, and what happens when standard underwriting applies instead.

An increasing number of insurers provide accelerated underwriting: qualified applicants meeting age and benefit thresholds receive approval via application data, medication records, driving history and other sources without needing a paramedical exam. Approved cases may be issued within hours. The information for each quote describes whether exams are mandatory, conditional, or unnecessary.

What it changes

Skipping a medical exam is not the same as skipping underwriting review. Your statements get checked, and policies issued based on wrong information can be cancelled in the first two years. Some carriers may request an exam or blood tests if concerns emerge from their records check; at that stage you can decide how to proceed.

Who tends to qualify

Generally, applicants below roughly age 60 buying coverage below each company's no-exam limit, with no significant health issues and no tobacco usage within the past year—in some cases longer. If you have visited a physician recently and blood work was done, certain carriers may use those results instead of requesting an independent exam.

When an exam is needed, a trained examiner usually comes to your residence or workplace in the Rancho Santa Margarita region for a 20- to 30-minute appointment at no expense. Better health profiles frequently result in improved rate classifications after exam results, so requesting an exam may actually be favorable.
